ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

With so many benefits to using an electric scooter, it is easy to see why Scooters have become one of the fastest growing modes of transport in Ireland. E-scooters are easy to ride, portable and eco- friendly Commuters are turning to e-Scooters as an efficient and practical way travel to work places. The small size of electric scooters means you can avoid the bad traffic jams of Dublin and other Irish cities and get to work quicker than most car drivers. Unlike cyclists, electric scooter commuters don’t have to exert themselves pedalling and can get to their destination feeling clean and refreshed. They are also a great choice of transport for college students who don’t want to depend on public transport. With new cycle lanes planned for Dublin, Cork, Galway and many other locations using an electric scooter will become easier and safer.

In Smarterhomestore.com we stock the two leading brands of e-Scooters in Ireland - Xiaomi and Kaiser Baas.

XIAOMI ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

Xiaomi is the leading developer of e-Scooters around the world and here in Ireland. www.smarterhomestore.com is an official Xiaomi scooter vendor - so if you buy from us you will be buying the real Xiaomi electric scooter and not some knock off imitation! The minimal yet modern design of Xiaomi Electric Scooters has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot "Best of the Best" Award, as well as the IF Design Award 2017. Mi Electric Scooter has a forward-thinking design that inspires and moves, just as it moves you ahead.

The Xiaomi M365 has been the world’s best-selling electric scooter since it was launched in 2016. The M365 Scooter is being replaced with a range of Xiaomi Scooters – the Xiaomi Mi Essential, the 1S and the Xiaomi Pro scooter. All of the Xiaomi electric scooters are made of quality aircraft grade aluminium alloy and offer a sleek and elegant design. These e-scooters are all portable and take just a few seconds to fold, making them an ideal way to commute.

All three of our Xiaomi e-scooters have a dashboard with a speedometer, offering 3 speed modes, normal, pedestrian and sport modes. Starting the scooter just involves pressing the button to turn on the dashboard, pushing off on the scooter to reach a 5km speed and pressing in the throttle lever beside the right handle. Taking you thumb off the throttle will automatically & slowly initiate the brakes on the Xiaomi scooters, but they also have handbrake that allows for more immediate breaking. One of the great features of the Xiaomi electric scooters is that the brakes have a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) which means that when you pull the brakes or release the throttle, any energy is generated which further increases the battery life.

The 8.5-inch pneumatic tyres on all three of Xiaomi’s scooters makes for a smoother ride on our bumpy Irish Roads.

Xiaomi 1S Electric Scooter

The Xiaomi 1S is our most popular scooter for the Irish roads. With a 25km an hour max speed, you can reduce your walking commute from 25 minutes to just 5 minutes. These speeds allow to comfortably cruise to work using cycle lanes or on roads.

Xiaomi Essential E-Scooter

The Xiaomi Essential Electric Scooter’s is our cheapest and most lightweight scooter. It is particularly popular with students and offers a maximum speed of 20km and a range of 25km.

Xiaomi Mi Pro 2 Electric Scooter

The X Pro 2 is a heavier scooter at 14.2kg, however it offers a larger battery and better range. With a range of up to 45km, it is an ideal choice for those who need to travel distances over 30km in one charge. The Xiaomi Pro is particularly suitable for commuters who have to negotiate steeper hills.

Kaiser Baas REVO E3 Electric Scooter

The Kaiser Baas is another great brand of electric scooter. Its REVO E3 e-scooter model has a stylish foldable long lasting aluminium alloy frame.  One of the more unique features of the REVO E3 Electric Scooter is that it has a removable battery which means you can take the battery to charge it rather than the whole scooter Similar to the Xiaomi it has front and rear lights, cruise control and a sleek display screen showing the current speed and front and rear lights  You can select from 3 speeds of Low (10kph), Medium (20kph) and High (25kph) It’s low speed of 10km is higher than that of the ‘Pedestrian mode’ of the Xiaomi Scooters which makes for nice fast walking pace.

NOTE ON THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER LAWS IN IRELAND

The laws relating to electric scooters and potential new regulations also need to be considered before purchasing a e-scooter. New Irish regulations on e-scooters are likely to be finalised this year, but Until this law is in place the use of Electric Scooters in Ireland is currently illegal on all public roads.  A new road traffic amendment Bill was put forward in early 2021 which proposes to classify electric scooters and other personal light electric vehicles (PLEV) similar to bicycles, however it will include some restrictions. It is likely that the maximum speed that will be 25km an hour.

To be classified as a PLEV the motor size is also likely to be limited. The current PLEV Bill proposes this should be a maximum of 250 watts. Although we are aware that many e-bikes currently on the road have larger motors than this so we will need to wait for the final Bill to see what is agreed. Both our Xiaomi S1 electric scooter and our Xiaomi Essential e-scooter have motors of 250 watts which would comply with current proposed Scooter regulations of a maximum motor size of 250w.

If you are planning to buy an electric scooter for a child, you should also be aware that the proposed Bill also plans to restrict the usage of electric scooters and other similar electric vehicles on public roads to over 16’s.

Further information on the progress of the new Electric Scooter laws & regulations in Ireland can be found at https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/bills/bill/2021/28/.
